     The History Behind The Story

This story would've never been written if it were not for an astute grandma noticing how well my son behaved himself while my wife and I shopped for clothing at the City Mall. Well...at least my wife shopped.  I had the parental duties of sitting in a chair next to the women's dressing room while holding Anthony upon my knees as we awaited Sharon's return from the dressing room.  For whatever reason, Anthony began pretending that his left and right hands were his buddies, and had named them. Goody was the left hand's name while Meany was his right hand's name.

Meany seemed to have a problem with treating Goody fairly. For instance, Goody would compliment Meany and then end it with a group hug. Meany would return the favor by calling Goody stupid and then pretend to choke him...I assume that Goody is a him. And to add insult to injury, Meany would call Goody stupid and tell him that his new name is Stupidity. Goody would say thank you while Meany would say, "that's why I call him stupidity."

As a concerned parent, I could only observe his behavior but for so long. I felt I should interject at this point. What I did was to use this time to teach Anthony to play fairly and to not call his friend names or he would lose friendships. Oh yeah, and stop the choking thing...it's a bit disturbing.

A sweet little old lady had observed us from an unknown advantage point and made it a point to tell me that she had observed the whole scenario and told me how neat she thought it was that my little boy pretended that he was talking to his hands and that he was a very good little boy, and how he wasn't running around the store being an annoyance. I thanked her for the compliment and then as fast as she mysteriously appeared from an unknown aisle, she disappeared amongst the myriads of clothes racks.

That conversation stuck in my head on that fateful day and has emerged itself in my newly published children's book: Talk To The Hands; Anthony's Days Shopping With Mom and Dad.
